National Awakening Day 2025: A Reflection on Our Behavior

National Awakening Day 2025: A Reflection on Our Behavior

Let us reflect in order to answer the various questions and issues of the nation with sincerity in our hearts.

ONE hundred and seventeen years ago—on May 20, 1908—a force was galvanized by the youth in this region of Indonesia to unite with the resolve to "Rise from the Status of a Colonized Nation." A series of struggles, coupled with countless sacrifices, culminated in the achievement of one goal: "INDEPENDENCE." On August 17, 1945, we reached that goal—Indonesia was no longer a colonized nation. We had become an independent nation. Yes, we gained independence from colonial rule. But, did our struggle end there? Let us take a moment to reflect.

We have risen; infrastructure is now complete, schools are spread across rural areas, and the people now enjoy electricity, telephones, the internet, and many other advances. We have been building since the Old Order, the New Order, the Reform Era, and up to the present day. In terms of physical development, science, technology, and even distribution (except in some areas, particularly in Eastern Indonesia), it is widely recognized that Indonesia, which has been independent since August 17, 1945, is now a developing country that is highly regarded by other nations. We have every reason to be proud. However, there remains a lingering question—what about the morals of the people of this nation, both the ordinary citizens and the officials?

Perhaps this is the topic for our reflection this National Awakening Day.

First, many people in this country are still very poor, and what is even worse is that many of them have a concerning mentality—always expecting aid despite having the potential to rise out of poverty. This is evidenced by various programs that end in failure, as the aid received is often squandered rather than reinvested. Many other economic empowerment programs for the people only lead to further weakening of their economic position. This is happening because certain officials in the nation and regional governments have a “mafia” mentality.

Second, the equal opportunity for education for all people is not matched by a system of management that is capable, resulting in a process and outcome of education that feels more like a formality. Schools are viewed as just a requirement at a certain age, during a specific time, with the sole purpose of obtaining a diploma, without considering what is truly beneficial from the educational process. Furthermore, educational institutions have been commercialized for personal gain. This situation has produced a generation "full of questions" that, when compared to other countries, shows that the average high school graduate in this nation is far behind those in developed nations. This is indeed concerning, though we cannot generalize it entirely.

Third, the general public still lacks a “do the best” culture, competitiveness, procedural adherence, and discipline in life within the framework of formal governance in this country, leading to a culture of collusion and conspiracy with officials. Even those seeking power are willing to buy and sell positions. This is no longer a secret but has become a daily spectacle for our citizens. So, will we remain silent?

Fourth, many officials with significant authority misuse it. They do not view their positions and authority as mandates and fail to understand that they are servants of the people. The misuse of authority that results in Collusion, Corruption, and Nepotism is a daily occurrence in this country. These officials are busy with global rhetoric, but their attitudes and behaviors are local and outdated.

Because of this, and today, May 20, 2025, is National Awakening Day—will it just be a ceremonial occasion to appreciate the services of the heroes from the past? Or will it be understood that today, and moving forward, our nation must RISE to improve: First, the morals and ethics of the people and officials. Second, the economic and social life structure of society. Third, the governance system that is clean and trustworthy. Fourth, the education system that will produce intelligent and moral generations, and finally, how to lift the nation from its decline into a strong and respected nation? Let us reflect to answer the various questions and challenges of the nation with honesty in our hearts. God willing, this will be beneficial for the future generations!
